Track 1: Oil Production

petroleum reservoir or oil and gas reservoir is a subsurface pool of hydrocarbons contained in porous or fractured rock formations. To obtain the contents of the oil reservoir, it is usually necessary to drill into the Earth's crust. Crude oil, or petroleum, and its refined components, collectively termed petrochemicals. These petrochemicals are the vital energy resources in the modern economy. Crude oil originates from ancient fossilized organic materials, such as zooplankton and algae, and through series geochemical processes converts into oil.  Crude oil after refinement is properly known as petroleum, and is used as fossil fuel. Evidence indicates that millions of years of heat and pressure changed the remains of microscopic plant and animal into oil and natural gas. Petroleum geologistsGeoscientistsGeophysicistsPetroleum GIS Scientists help in studying the process of source rock formations, petroleum basins, identifying the oil reservoirs etc. whereas the petroleum engineerschemical engineers involves in the refinery process of the crude oil to various useful products.

Track 2:  Drilling

Drilling is a unique mechanical process that is designed to bring petroleum oil hydrocarbons to the surface by making a hole or bore into the earth’s surface. Drilling rig is generally used for Oil Drilling which contains all necessary equipment to circulate the drilling fluid, hoist and turn the pipe, control down hole, remove cuttings from the drilling fluid, and generate on-site power for these operations. Usually some natural gas is also produced along with the oil. Drilling rigs are used not only to identify geologic reservoirs but also to create holes that allow the extraction of oil or natural gas from those reservoirs.

Track 4: Catalytic Cracking

Catalytic Cracking is the process commonly used in the Petroleum refinery process where heavy oil is passed through metal chambers under pressure and high temperature in the presence of catalysts such as alumina, silica, or zeolites. This boiling breaks up and more complex long-chain oil molecules into lighter, smaller, and simpler short-chain molecules such as those of gasoline. The metal chambers used in the process are called catalytic crackers or cat crackers. Catalytic cracking process was developed in1920 by Eugene Houdry.  Houdry process was based on cyclic fixed bed configuration. There has been continuous up gradation in catalytic cracking process from its incept of fixed bed technology to latter fluidized bed catalytic cracking (FCC).The feed stock for catalytic cracking is normally light gas oil from vacuum distillation column. Catalytic cracking cracks low value high molecular weight hydrocarbons to more value added products (low molecular weight) like gasoline, LPG Diesel along with very important petrochemical feedstock like propylene, C4 gases like isobutylene, Isobutene, butane and butane.

Track 5: Storage and Spilling

Oil and refined petroleum products are stored in tanks at various points of their journey from oil well to the consumer. Specially designed equipment and a variety of sophisticated sensors help to prevent or, in the event of an accidental release, contain spills. Usually different finished products are stored at marine terminals where tankers offload their cargo or at refineries and are distributed by truck, rail, or through pipeline.  Release or discharge of liquid petroleum hydrocarbon into the environment, especially marine areas, due to human activity is referred as an oil spill. This is one kind of pollution. The term is usually applied to marine oil spills, where oil is released into the ocean or coastal waters. In general, Oil Spills can be caused by  breaking down of the oil containers or the equipment’s, natural disasters such as hurricanes, accidents involving tankers, barges, pipelines, refineries, drilling rigs, and storage facilities. Depending on the circumstances, oil spills can be very harmful to marine birds and mammals and also can harm fish and shellfish. Environmental Engineers can find the solution for the problem of Oil Spills. Different methods are available and based on the intensity and state, environmental engineers use the methods to isolate oil from water.

Track 6: Transportation

Oil Transport refers to the various methods of transportation used to move oil from one location to another. Generally petroleum is transported through marine tankers, barges, pipelines, rail cars and by trucks. The biggest problem with moving this oil is pollution, and the chance that the oil can spill. Petroleum oil is very hard to clean up and is very toxic to living animals.

Track 7: Oil Prices

Petroleum is vital to many industries as well a critical concern for many nations. Oil accounts for a large percentage of the world’s energy consumption, ranging from a low of 32% for Europe and Asia, to a high of 53% for the Middle East. Oil market or oil prices can be influenced by the internal issues of major oil producing countries. According to a survey the projected oil demand of Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries is expected to increase from 9.5 million barrel per day in 2015 to 11.9 million barrels per day in 2035.

Track 8:  Sustainable Usage

Sustainability is difficult to define and is in basic terms referred to as the process of maintaining a certain level of productivity in an organization, community, etc. It is often used interchangeably, especially in the petroleum industry, with the term “sustainable development,” with the latter being the more accepted of the two. The most widely accepted definition of sustainable development came from the Brundtland Commission in 1987, which defines sustainable development as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Sustainable energy apart from other renewable energy terminology such as alternative energy by focusing on the ability of an energy source to continue providing energy. Sustainable energy can produce some pollution of the environment, as long as it is not sufficient to prohibit heavy use of the source for an indefinite amount of time. It is also distinct from low-carbon energy, which is sustainable only in the sense that it does not add to the CO2 in the atmosphere.

Track 9: Safety

The petroleum industry is concerned that application of Process Safety Management (PSM) to low-hazard petroleum operations, including onshore production and atmospheric storage tanks, would result in a significant regulatory burden to refineries and onshore producing facilities.

From the very nature of crude oil, its refining and the processes relating to its operation provide an extremely hazardous situation. Above all, of course, is the inherent danger of fire. Considerable steps are taken therefore to prevent this, and if a fire does occur, to combat and restrain it in the most effective manner. Although the fire hazard is always the primary concern in the refining of petroleum, there are other hazards that are present and always need to be addressed. Among these are the handlings of toxic and dangerous chemicals that are used in the refining processes. There is also always present the danger to life of toxic products that are produced in some of the refining processes. Perhaps the most notable is hydrogen sulfide, which is common to all modern refineries.

Track 11:Environmental Effects of the petroleum

Petroleum-derived contaminants constitute one of the most prevalent sources of environmental degradation in the industrialized world. In large concentrations, the hydrocarbon molecules that make up crude oil and petroleum products are highly toxic to many organisms, including humans. Petroleum also contains trace amounts of sulfur and nitrogen compounds, which are dangerous by themselves and can react with the environment to produce secondary poisonous chemicals. The dominance of petroleum products in the United States and the world economy creates the conditions for distributing large amounts of these toxins into populated areas and ecosystems around the globe.

Petroleum Refinery: Petroleum refining process is a inimitable and crucial step in the petroleum production process from the wellhead to the pump. The main economic objective in refining is to maximize the value addition in converting crude oil into finished products. Refining process adds value to crude oil.  Petroleum refineries are large, capital-intensive manufacturing facilities with extremely complex processing schemes. They convert crude oils and other input streams into dozens of refined co-products. Liquefied petroleum gases (LPG), Gasoline, Jet fuel, kerosene, diesel, lubricating oils and waxes, fuel oils, asphalt etc are some of the co products obtained during petroleum refinery process. Importance and Scope:

Petroleum refining processes are the chemical engineering processes and other facilities used in petroleum refineries (also referred to as oil refineries) to transform crude oil into useful products such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), gasoline or petrol, kerosene, jet fuel, diesel oil and fuel oils. Petroleum refineries are very large industrial complexes that involve many different processing units and auxiliary facilities such as utility units and storage tanks. Each refinery has its own unique arrangement and combination of refining processes largely determined by the refinery location, desired products and economic considerations. There are most probably no two refineries that are identical in every respect. Some modern petroleum refineries process as much as 800,000 to 900,000 barrels (127,000 to 143,000 cubic meters) per day of crude oil.

Petroleum engineering is ideally the science of exploration and extraction of petroleum based hydrocarbons like crude oil, natural gas and other energy forms from the earth for economic purposes. Petroleum engineering can only be undertaken through the design, drilling and successful operation of the wells and their systems.

Petroleum and Refinery Market analysis:

The petroleum industry includes the global processes of exploration, extraction, refining, transporting (often by oil tankers and pipelines), and marketing petroleum products. The largest volume products of the industry are fuel oil and gasoline (petrol). Petroleum (oil) is also the raw material for many chemical products, including pharmaceuticals, solvents, fertilizers, pesticides, and plastics. The industry is usually divided into three major components: upstream, midstream and downstream. Midstream operations are usually included in the downstream category.

Petroleum is vital to many industries, and is of importance to the maintenance of industrial civilization in its current configuration, and thus is a critical concern for many nations. Oil accounts for a large percentage of the world’s energy consumption, ranging from a low of 32% for Europe and Asia, to a high of 53% for the Middle East.

Other geographic regions' consumption patterns are as follows: South and Central America (44%), Africa (41%), and North America (40%). The world consumes 30 billion barrels (4.8 km³) of oil per year, with developed nations being the largest consumers. The United States consumed 25% of the oil produced in 2007. The production, distribution, refining, and retailing of petroleum taken as a whole represents the world's largest industry in terms of dollar value.

During the period of 2009-2014, the global petroleum market has generated about $5 trillion in revenue and has posted a strong growth of 11.9%. During the same period the U.S market generated $730 billion in revenue and has generated a growth of 7.6%. According to a survey the projected oil demand of Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries is expected to increase from 9.5 million barrel per day in 2015 to 11.9 million barrels per day in 2035.

Snapshot of Australian Petroleum Market:

Australia's local oil refineries constantly compete with imported petroleum products from large highly efficient refineries in Asia, regardless of the cost of importing and refining crude oil. Consequently, the price of petrol at Australian refineries is based on international petrol prices. If local prices were higher than international prices, imports of petrol would displace local production. The Australian refining sector is a price taker. Domestic prices are closely linked to relevant international prices. The Singapore benchmark price of petrol (MOPS95 Petrol) is the key price benchmark for petrol in Australia. MOPS95 Petrol plus shipping costs and Australian taxes represents almost the entire wholesale price of petrol (around 95%). According to APPEA, “Australia is a world leader in LNG innovation. The world’s first coal seam gas-to-LNG projects are being developed in Queensland. Australia also seems likely to become the first country in the world to host a floating LNG project

Why Brisbane?

Brisbane has been ranked as more beautiful than Kyoto, Seville, Rio de Janeiro and astoundingly Sydney in a social media poll by travel guide company Rough Guides.

It’s official and it’s global. Brisbane has been named 25th in the Monocle Magazine index of the world’s top liveable cities. The poll, which took its votes from Twitter and Facebook, rated Brisbane and Sydney as the eighth and thirteenth most beautiful cities in the world respectively.

"(Brisbane) has been chosen for its winning combination of high-rise modern architecture, lush green spaces and the enormous Brisbane River that snakes its way through the centre before emptying itself into the azure Moreton Bay,"

The good drum on Brisbane is our fine subtropical climate; our 2792 hours of sunshine a year; our 44 book shops; and our leafy parks with their 906 council-operated barbecues. And then there’s Brisbane’s low cost of living in comparison to other Australian cities; a spacious inner city environment; our multiculturalism; our thriving restaurants and cafes; unique architecture; outdoor lifestyle; and an efficient network of ferry, train and bus lines that link the city’s sprawling suburbs to the CBD.
